Once cured, hard shelled gourds will last indefinitely and can be painted, carved, cut or drilled to make birdhouses, bowls, planters and hundreds of other craft projects. The Gaggle of Gourds, 'Lagenaria siceraria', is an assortment of hard shelled gourds that creative crafters will love. For thousands of years, gourds have been grown to used as utensils, storage containers, musical instruments, and ornamental objects. The soils should be well drained and very rich in organic matter. Place in full sun. Gourds are very frost sensitive. This gourd mix includes Birdhouse or Bottle Gourd, Calabash or Penguin, Corsican, Dipper, and Speckled Swan. Orach - Red - Burgundy Orach is used in salads, cooked like spinach, or used to stuff leaves. Plant in early spring, 4 to 6 weeks before the last frost date. The best and most tender leaves are the ones from the top of the plant and/or from young plants. The Burgandy Orach makes a pretty backdrop in flower beds and it has the mild, edible spinach-like leaves. Successive plantings can be made every 3 weeks for continuous fresh greens. Orach is an old kitchen garden vegetable grown by American settlers, deserves more attention.
