Ash Leaf Spirea - Sem
This dwarf variety makes a wonderful low hedge, or a great accent. It is especially valuable for northern climates. Sem Ash Leaf Spirea, Sorbaria sorbifolia 'Sem' (16,336), is a pinkish-red, fern-like spring foliage that unfurls along deep pink stems . In July and August the neat, round shrub covers itself with creamy white blossoms. It is elegant, space-saving, and beautiful! Sem forms a neat 3 to 4 foot shrub in the partly shaded garden, which adds a nice texture. Sem is an improvement from older Sorbaria varieties. This shrub is easy to grow and quite adaptable, thriving in any well-drained soil. Compact, better-branched, and more dense than others, it creates a tight, bushy little mound in the garden, making a fine low hedge or accent planting as well as a shrub border. ... details
Spirea - Sparkling Carpet No pruning is required. It looks like a tiny version of ‘Gold Flame’ and produces few pink flowers in summer. The plant also likes mulch and summer watering. Sparkling Carpet Spirea, spiraea japonica 'Sparkling Carpet' (PP13,665), is a fine-textured, small spreading shrub with lime-gold leaves. Sparkling Carpet prefers full sun, and this is one of the easiest shrubs to grow since it tolerates many soils, except extremely wet. The leaves are bronze-red when young, then turn mahogany-red in fall. Since it grows only 6-10 inches tall and 15-18 inches wide, it can be used as a groundcover or bedding plant! It would also be good for filling a space in a shrub border. Native to China and Japan. |
