Blueberry - Northland
Plants appreciate a good organic mulch. Blueberries are delicious, exceptionally nutritious, high in bioflavanoids. It is self-pollinating. Fruit size is small and has a wild berry flavor. It likes an organically rich, medium to wet, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. It is effective in shrub borders or as part of less formal shrub plantings in areas such as native plant gardens or open woodlands. Although blueberries are self-fertile, cross-pollination produces the best fruit crop. Reddish stems can be attractive in winter. The Northland Blueberry, 'Vaccinium 'Northland', has small dark blue fruit that has an excellent, wild berry flavor. The shallow, fibrous roots need constant moisture and good drainage. It has limber branches which do not break under heavy snow loads and adapts well to the sub zero climate. Prune early before spring growth. Birds love blueberries so be sure to plant enough to share!. Blueberries are a delicious gourmet treat that may be eaten fresh or used in cobbler, cake, sauce, jam, jelly or syrup. It is a great plant for ornamental use because of its low, spreading habit. Clusters of dainty, waxy, bell-shaped, white flowers bloom in spring. This is the most cold-hardy highbush variety grown.
