Blueberry - Patriot
The shallow, fibrous roots need constant moisture and good drainage. Blueberries are a delicious gourmet treat that may be eaten fresh or used in cobbler, cake, sauce, jam, jelly or syrup. Plants appreciate a good organic mulch. Patriot is a highbush blueberry cultivar which typically grows 4-6’ tall. Although blueberries are self-fertile, cross-pollination produces the best fruit crop. Birds love blueberries so be sure to plant enough to share!. The Patriot Blueberry, Vaccinium 'Patriot', has large blue fruit with excellent blueberry flavor, borne in tight clusters, and ripening in late July. Its cold hardiness and consistent crops of giant (quarter-sized) fruit make it a popular selection. It is self-pollinating. Its waxy, bell-shaped, white flowers appear in May, which makes it an early season variety. This vigorous, upright and open shrub is an excellent landscape plant with its spring flowers and orange fall color. It is low growing and spreading with arcing branches. It likes an organically rich, medium to wet, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Blueberries are delicious, exceptionally nutritious, high in bioflavanoids. Prune early before spring growth. You may get 10-20 pounds of dark blue, highly flavored fruit from a single bush. ... more information
